This paragraph or two will answer your question about why jalapeno peppers are spicy.
They are spicy because of the capsaicin trapped inside the pepper. Capsaicin itself does not taste or smell like anything but they do produce spiciness. Another fascinating thing about these peppers is that casaicin is only found in the jalapeno pepper itself.
Capaisin is made by the glands which are stored in the placenta of the pepper the placenta is right under the stem. Alot of people take the placenta and the seeds out since they are so spicy. The placenta is the hottest part of the pepper because it holds the Capsaivin in it.

Rainy,
ReplyDeleteI am a friend of Oma. What an informative post! Are these the peppers that you must be careful not to get the juices in your eyes? Keep up your wonderful blog! Sue
Rainy, you are exactly right! I live in the Southwestern part of the United States where jalapeno peppers are grown. My husband likes his dishes spicey so he likes to keep the seeds in them. But I like mine mild, so I make sure to take out all the seeds. Another thing you have to be careful of when disposing of the seeds, is if you put them in a garbage disposal, don't breath in the air near it. It will take your breath away, so that means it can be airborne too! You did a good job on your report! I am also a friend of your Oma!
